(Herkimer, NY) Herkimer County Community College President Ann Marie Murray announces her support of the Public Higher Education Empowerment and Innovation Act released by Governor David A. Paterson.

With the implementation of the Act, the State University of New York will have the flexibility to achieve the promise of economic growth through top quality public higher education.

Highlights of the Act that have potential to benefit community colleges include: differential tuition by campus and program; a fair and equitable tuition setting policy that includes an out of state enrollment maximum percentage limitation; and the authorization of the Dormitory Authority to finance and construct community college dormitories directly on behalf of each community college.

President Murray said, “We are encouraged by the Governor’s proposed reforms to public higher education in New York State. If approved, these policy changes can have a tremendous positive impact on our colleges and communities.”

With the implementation of the Empowerment and Innovation Act, SUNY and its students and the communities it serves will benefit from a more cost-effective educational environment, greater financial independence and streamlined operations, and multi-campus collaborations and partnerships.
