Emerging Business Competition Announced

(Herkimer, NY) Herkimer County Community College; John Piseck, Herkimer County Legislator and Chairman of the Herkimer IDA; and the Central Upstate Regional Alliance sponsored an economic development event on Tuesday, December 15 at HCCC. A business competition, sponsored by the Creative Core, was announced at the event.

The competition includes three categories: Emerging Business, Innovations in Agribusiness and Student Business Idea. Participation in the competition is limited to individuals or teams from the 12-county Central Upstate New York region which includes Herkimer County.

The Emerging Business Competition is open to small businesses formally incorporated by January 22, 2010 that have $5 million or less in annual revenue. There is a $150 application fee and a grade prize of $200,000.

The Innovations in Agribusiness Competition has no application fee and a $15,000 grade prize. Businesses must be formally incorporated by January 22, 2010 to qualify, and must have developed and implemented an innovative product, process, or technology that has significantly impacted their competitiveness and the competitiveness of the region’s agricultural community.

The Student Business Idea Competition is open to high school and college students only. The $5,000 grand prize will be awarded to the student exhibiting the best individual business idea. In addition, a $1,000 award will be given to a professor, school, or business club affiliated with the student winner. There is no application fee, but only one submission per student will be accepted.

The competition is designed to help stimulate job creation and business development by providing financial and in-kind resources to companies in the region, improving entrepreneurial culture and visibility of entrepreneurial activity in the region, increasing investment-grade deal flow in the region and connecting businesses with a wide range of resources. Applications are due by Friday, January 22 at 5 p.m.
