Basic Computer Fundamentals – Level I is designed for those who have little or no prior knowledge of computer equipment or software. The course includes hands-on training to build confidence by teaching basic computer skills. Participants will be exposed to the Windows operating system, computer terminology and basic word processing. The class meets for one session on Saturday, April 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required by March 29. The fee is $42.

Basic Computer Fundamentals – Level II is intended for those who are comfortable with the basic operation of a computer. This course builds on Basic Computer Fundamentals – Level I. Participants will learn to create, edit, save and retrieve documents. Participants will also explore ways to protect computer equipment from outside invasions. The class meets for one session on Saturday, April 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required by April 6. The fee is $42.

Navigating in Windows is designed for those who are comfortable using a computer with Microsoft Windows. This course builds on Basic Computer Fundamentals – Levels I and II. Participants will learn skills such as accessing disk drives, downloading information from the Internet and creating files and folders. The class meets for one session on Saturday, April 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required by April 13. The fee is $42.

The tournament will be held Monday, June 21 at the Cedar Lake Club in Clayville, NY. The format is Captain and Crew scramble with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Registration and lunch will begin at noon. An awards ceremony and dinner will begin at 7 p.m. The fee is $100 per person. Corporate team fees begin at $500 and include a tee sponsorship.

This annual event supports student scholarships and academic excellence at Herkimer County Community College. Tee sponsorships are available for $100 per tee.

(Herkimer, NY, March 8, 2010) Members of the Herkimer County Community College men’s and women’s swimming and diving team recently competed in the 2010 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship meet at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, FL.

Senior Kasumi Fujii (Otaru-shi, Japan), HCCC’s only female competitor at the meet, finished the women’s 200 yard backstroke in 14^th place.

HCCC’s men improved their team score by 17 points over last year’s national championship result, finishing the meet in 11^th place overall. The men’s top finishes included eighth in the 200 yard freestyle relay, eighth in the 400 yard freestyle relay, 12^th in the 800 yard freestyle relay and 11^th in the 200 yard medley relay. The men’s swimmers competing at the meet were senior Scott Ledwith (Geneseo, NY), senior Joseph McGrath (Red Hood, NY), senior Christian Torgersen (Dover, NY) and freshman Greg Griffin (Dallas, TX).

Freshman Darin Spiry (Gloversville, NY), HCCC’s only diver competing in the meet, finished the men’s one meter springboard event in ninth place.

All six athletes will receive a College Swimming Coach’s Association of America (CSCAA) Honorable Mention All-American certificate for finishing in the top 16 of an event.

Herkimer, NY— The Herkimer County College Foundation recently received a donation from Jay and Edna Holcomb of Greenfield, NY for the purchase of a scoreboard for Herkimer County Community College’s softball field.

A talented, amateur photographer with a passion for sports, Jay Holcomb has taken thousands photos while attending Herkimer athletic events during the past five years. Holcomb said, “I’ve gotten to observe the Herkimer coaches and players closely and have been most favorably impressed with the quality of the Herkimer program. Those observations of staff, players and facilities have been so positive that I’ve wanted to make some lasting contribution to the program. I believe that some of my photography has helped the program, but I wanted to also make a more concrete contribution.”

Holcomb wanted to help fund the scoreboard to complement other recent upgrades to the softball field. He is doing so in honor of his father, Edward L. Holcomb, a fast pitch softball player who believed in the value of sportsmanship. Holcomb said, “I believe that athletics have great value for players, coaches and spectators. However, one thing of which everyone involved in athletics must constantly be aware is that the way you play the game is much more important than winning or losing. I believe that the Herkimer Generals are on the right track in this regard.”

Holcomb said “I have been honored by having several of my photos hanging on the walls of the varsity gym. It is even more of an honor to be able to stand right on the sidelines and photograph these great Herkimer teams in action. My dear wife Edna understands this, and she and I are very happy to be able to donate the softball scoreboard. Further, I am delighted to be part of the Herkimer community because it’s a big promotion for me. You see, when I was in the Air Force, I was first a Lieutenant and then a Captain. But now, hey, I’m a General!” The Holcombs hope other Herkimer fans and alumni also consider giving back to the College in honor of one of their loved ones.

Donald Dutcher, Director of Athletics, said “We are extremely grateful to Jay for his support and generous contributions to the athletic program and for all he does for our student-athletes and coaches. His dedication, heart and passion for Herkimer’s athletic program are priceless.”

Proceeds from the gala will benefit the Herkimer County College Foundation. The Foundation awards more than $150,000 in scholarships annually to HCCC students and invests in other College programs, such as instructional technology, graduation activities and awards events. The work of the Foundation plays a vital role in the enhancement of campus life, as well as assuring that the College continues its demonstrated commitment to higher education.

Herkimer, NY—Herkimer County Community College is offering youth non-credit classes.

Teen Dance Moves for Fitness will teach participants dance moves and routines. Taught by the HCCC Dance Team Coach, fun and fitness will be combined in this program for ages 13-17. The class meets for five sessions on Fridays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. beginning on March 26. Pre-registration is required by March 18. The fee is $49.00.

Children’s Drawing will teach students drawing techniques such as recognizing and creating shapes and lines and shading. This class is for ages 8-12 and meets for five sessions on Mondays from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. beginning on March 22. Pre-registration is required by March 18. The fee is $49.

This 75-hour course provides the instruction required to become a licensed New York State real estate salesperson. It is regulated by the NYS Department of State, which mandates the required course content. The course will meet Monday and Wednesday evenings from April 5 through June 23 from 6 – 9:30 pm. Pre-registration is required by March 29. Please note that a minimum number of registrations are required to run this course. The fee is $399. A textbook is required and not included in the course fee.
