UTICA, NY – The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Inc. will join more than 700 community foundations across the United States in observing charitable giving during Community Foundation Week, November 12–18, 2009.

In 2007, community foundations gave an estimated $4.1 billion to a variety of nonprofit activities in fields that included the arts, education, environment, disaster relief, and health and human services.

Locally, The Community Foundation has been a force for improving lives and promoting philanthropy throughout Herkimer and Oneida counties since 1952. The Foundation has made more than 4,200 grants totaling over $33.5 million in support of causes ranging from education to health care, the arts to the environment. Grants are generated by the more than 260 funds that comprise The Foundation’s endowment, established and advanced by area individuals and families.

“Community foundations are at the heart of our cities and towns. We know the places of need in our area, and we can direct resources to solve those problems,” said Peggy O’Shea, president & CEO. “Here at The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, donors can enjoy personalized grant-making support to make the most

of their giving, consolidate their giving into one charitable fund, donate any type of asset, create a lasting legacy in their family name, receive professional investment management and tax accounting of their donations. Donors also enjoy introductions or site visits to their favorite charities, as well as seminars on topics of interest for enriching their community – and much more. Our professional guidance makes charitable giving easier and more powerful.”

Community foundations are one of the fastest-growing forms of philanthropy in the United States, with total assets of more than $50 billion. Every state in the U.S. is home to at least one community foundation. Although community foundations make up only 1 percent of all U.S. grantmaking foundations, they account for more than 9 percent of all foundation giving. While the community and clients each foundation serves vary greatly, every community foundation shares in the commitment of improving the lives of others.

“Community foundations are catalysts for positive change within both urban and rural areas,” said Steve Gunderson, president and CEO of the Council on Foundations. “Donors of all income levels and from all geographic regions are finding community foundations to be an ideal way for them to easily give back to their community in a meaningful way.”

Across the nation, community foundations help create stronger hometowns where families want to establish roots, with recreational parks, social service programs and scholarship opportunities for promising local students.

Community Foundation Week began in 1989 with a proclamation from former president George H.W. Bush and a congressional briefing about community foundation activities. The observance has made donors seeking to maximize their philanthropic dollars aware of community foundations’ charitable activities and services.

For more information about The Community Foundation, call 315-735-8212 or visit www.foundationhoc.org.

Herkimer, NY—Thirty eight Herkimer County Community College freshmen, all from Herkimer County, were honored at a scholarship reception held at the college on Wednesday, October 21. Seventeen students were recognized for earning the Foundation Tuition Scholarship and 21 for receiving the HCCC Hope Scholarship.

President of the Herkimer County College Foundation Robert Brenchley said, “We are recognizing these students for setting a mark high for themselves, for aiming high, for accepting the challenge to achieve excellence and for following through to realize their goals.”

The Foundation Tuition Scholarship program provides full tuition for Herkimer County residents who graduate in the top 15 percent of their high school classes. A new opportunity for Herkimer County high school seniors, the HCCC Hope Scholarship is a $500 scholarship awarded to incoming freshmen who reside in Herkimer County and have a proven record of community service, extracurricular activities and leadership experience. Both scholarships are funded through the Herkimer County College Foundation.

HCCC President Ann Marie Murray said, “Although these students see their scholarships as a gift, we see them as a great gift to the college. They are the ones who raise the bar for others, and we encourage them to continue to excel academically and be active on campus and in the community, to achieve their academic goals and become successful alumni.”
