Herkimer, NY— Several Herkimer County Community College student-athletes were recently named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Distinguished Academic All-Americans and Academic All-Americans.

To be nominated as a Distinguished Academic All-American, athletes must have completed 45 semesters hours and maintain a minimum of 3.8 GPA. The 2010 honorees are:

George Hajjar (Utica, NY/Whitesboro), Baseball

Jack Pilkinton (Bourne End, England/Wye Valley School), Men’s Soccer

Lindsay Roth (Frankfort, NY/Ilion), Women’s Tennis

Brittany Varin (Ellenburg Depot, NY/North Adirondack Central School), Women’s Soccer

Director of Athletics Donald Dutcher said, “I am very pleased to have these student-athletes honored for their academic and athletic accomplishments. These individuals represent the true meaning of student-athlete and are superb role models for young people.”

Both east bound lanes were blocked for approximately 40 minutes and all lanes were opened at approximately 8:21 a.m. this morning.

Miller was not injured however Schuck and Wicks were transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for non life threatening injuries.

State Police are continuing their investigation.

“This was a community-wide effort, and we want everyone to come and celebrate this remarkable achievement with us,” said John Hobika, Jr., the 2009 Campaign Chair.

The event kicks off at 5:00PM and includes great food, lots of recognition, music from Monk Rowe, and a special performance by Danceworks.

Herkimer, NY—Herkimer County Community College will host a science fair, sponsored by Prevalere Life Sciences, Inc., for Herkimer County students in grades 7-12 on Saturday, February 6, 2010. The purpose of the science fair is to encourage students’ interest in science and engineering, provide students with a learning experience and to recognize talented students of Herkimer County. Winners will be eligible to attend the Regional Science Fair in Syracuse on March 20 and 21, 2010.

To be eligible, students must attend a public or private school or be homeschooled in Herkimer County and be sponsored by a science teacher from their school.

(Schuyler, NY) On 12/06/09, ROBERT P. GOOLDEN, age 47, of 112 Cherry St., Ogdensburg, NY was arrested by the New York State Police – Schuyler for Criminal Contempt 2nd after being stopped for erratic operation on the Thruway. Mr. GOOLDEN was found to be in possession of three hunting rifles while the subject of an Order of Protection issued by the state of Florida which prohibited him from possessing any firearms. The Oneida County District Attorney’s office advises that the terms of the Florida Order of Protection are enforceable in New York State. Mr. GOOLDEN was released to appear in the Town of Westmoreland court on 12/16/09 at 3:00 pm.

(Schuyler, NY) On 12/06/09, KELLY A. HARPER, age 47, of 2526 Jordanville Rd., Warren, NY was arrested by the New York State Police – Schuyler for Petit Larceny. Ms. HARPER was an employee of Faber’s Gift Shops located in the Schuyler Service Area on the Thruway when a deposit she was responsible for making on 11/17/09 was not received by the bank. Ms. HARPER was released to appear in the Town of Schuyler court on 12/21/09 at 6:00 pm.

His marriage to the former Marietta Schlotzhauer took place in Mohawk on August 15, 1942; a blessed union of 67 years. He was last employed with Library Bureau as a kiln operator retiring after 32 years of dedicated service.
Mr. Wacyk was at one time a volunteer policeman for the Village of Herkimer. He was a talented dancer and belonged to the United Polka League. In his spare time Michael enjoyed working on various projects and was a self taught handyman. He enjoyed pitching for local softball teams when time permitted. He will be sadly missed by his family.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years: Marietta of Schuyler; a daughter: Donna Vandell of Mohawk; a son: William Wacyk; a brother: Stephen Wacyk and wife Shirley of Hatfield, PA; a sister: Anna Getman; his grandchildren: Robert Gegler and wife Jean, Brian Wacyk, and Krista Charles; great grandchildren: Jessica Gegler, Sarah Gegler, Robert Gegler, Jr., Matthew and Samantha Cano and Abagail Charles; many nieces, nephews, and in laws. He was preceded in death by a sister: Mary Hinotsky.
Relatives and friends are invited to visitation at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, between Ilion and Frankfort, 894-8000 on Friday, November 20, 2009 from 5-7 p.m. His funeral will commence at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, from the chapel of the Enea Family Funeral Home, Ilion/Frankfort, where prayer will be offered and at 2:30 p.m. from Christ Episcopal Church, 300 N. Main Street, Herkimer where his Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated by the Rev. Paul Bailey, Rector. Procession will follow to St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest. Kindly consider memorial offerings to the Christ Episcopal Church or to Valley Health Services; envelopes may be obtained at the funeral parlor. Arrangements are by director-Daniel J. Enea.

Herkimer, NY—Thirty eight Herkimer County Community College freshmen, all from Herkimer County, were honored at a scholarship reception held at the college on Wednesday, October 21. Seventeen students were recognized for earning the Foundation Tuition Scholarship and 21 for receiving the HCCC Hope Scholarship.

President of the Herkimer County College Foundation Robert Brenchley said, “We are recognizing these students for setting a mark high for themselves, for aiming high, for accepting the challenge to achieve excellence and for following through to realize their goals.”

The Foundation Tuition Scholarship program provides full tuition for Herkimer County residents who graduate in the top 15 percent of their high school classes. A new opportunity for Herkimer County high school seniors, the HCCC Hope Scholarship is a $500 scholarship awarded to incoming freshmen who reside in Herkimer County and have a proven record of community service, extracurricular activities and leadership experience. Both scholarships are funded through the Herkimer County College Foundation.

HCCC President Ann Marie Murray said, “Although these students see their scholarships as a gift, we see them as a great gift to the college. They are the ones who raise the bar for others, and we encourage them to continue to excel academically and be active on campus and in the community, to achieve their academic goals and become successful alumni.”
