Herkimer County Dairy Princess

With the hot summer months approaching everyone is in need of a cool and easy to make treat. What better of a way than to cool down with dairy during Dairy Month? Enjoy this Lemon Trifle with a glass of cold milk to fulfill one of the three daily servings of dairy needed. It is important that consumers of all ages are incorporating their three servings of dairy every day, especially during these hot summer months.

A trifle is easy to make, and something the whole family is sure to love! Lemon Trifle can be found in Best of Taste of Home- the First 10 Years cookbook, a recipe submitted by Pat Stevens. Enjoy!

Lemon Trifle

1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk

1 carton (8 ounces) lemon yogurt

1/3 cup of lemon juice

2 teaspoons grated lemon peel

2 cups whipped topping

1 angel food cake (10 inches) cut into 1 inch cubes

2 cups fresh raspberries

½ cup flaked coconut, toasted

Fresh mint, optional

In a bowl, combine the first four ingredients. Fold in whipped topping. Place half of the cake cubes in a trifle bowl or 2- qt. serving bowl. Top with half of the lemon mixture. Repeat layers. Top with raspberries. Garnish with coconut and mint if desired. Yield: 14 servings.

On behalf of the children, families, volunteers and staff of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oneida and Herkimer counties, we would like to thank everyone who helped make our 28th Annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake such a tremendous success.

More than 350 bowlers participated in the event, which was held on March 14 at King Pin Lanes in Rome and on March 21 at Pin-O-Rama in Utica, raising nearly $40,000 to benefit the local Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

We would like to thank our major sponsors Northern Safety Co. and Rome Strip Steel Co., Inc., Wal Mart, the Hartford, Bank of New York Mellon for their continued support, and also the Uptown Theatre for hosting two movie presentations to benefit our cause. We appreciate the generosity of all of our sponsors and would also like to thank the event hosts, Pin-O-Rama and King Pin Lanes. Thank you to the many bowlers as well, who each year make this a special event for the children in our community.

The guidance of a one-to-one friendship has proven to be one of the most effective tools in reducing drug and alcohol use by today’s youth. More than 100 children are still awaiting a match and events such as the Bowl for Kids’ Sake is crucial in spreading the word about this program.

Proceeds from the event are changing the lives of special children in our community everyday – and by investing in them now, we are investing in their futures!

Sincerely,

Julie Fatata, Chair of the Bowl for Kids’ Sake

The covert actions on the part of some Herkimer County Legislators in connection with Country Manor are shocking. Having anyone in power with such disdain for open government that they hide information from those that are elected to represent us is dangerous.

Some legislators, including GOP Legislator Robert Hyde, have challenged the leaderships’ secretive operation. I respect and admire Mr. Hyde for having the courage to stand up for good government in the face of an inevitable backlash from the leadership. Other majority legislators have silently condoned their leader’s actions.

The Country Manor situation deserves the attention of the entire legislature. The leaders’ recent covert operation re-enforces the need for open caucuses and independent legislators that are not beholden to the hierarchy.

Candidate for Herkimer County Legislator, District 1 (Parts of Herkimer and German Flatts)
