More Than 500 Cyclists Registered for 400-Mile Trip from Buffalo to Albany

The New York State Canal Corporation and Parks & Trails NY recently announced the beginning of the 12th Annual Cycling the Erie Canal, a 400-mile bicycling tour from Buffalo to Albany scheduled for July 11-18, 2010.

The eight-day recreational bicycling tour will help highlight the beauty, history, culture and recreational appeal of the Canal System and the Canalway Trail, a prime tourism destination in New York State.

More than 500 cyclists from 36 states are participating in this year’s event, as well as international representatives from as far away as France.

Carmella R. Mantello, Director of the New York State Canal Corporation said, “The Canalway Trail provides numerous recreational, tourism and economic development opportunities throughout New York State as demonstrated through the success of Cycling the Erie Canal. Each year, cyclists from all over the country and the world participate in this popular event to experience firsthand the unparalleled history and beauty of the New York State Canal System and Canalway Trail. The Canal Corporation is pleased to once again partner with Parks & Trails NY to sponsor the Twelfth Annual Cycling the Erie Canal bike tour.”

Robin Dropkin, Executive Director of Parks & Trails New York, said, “The 12th annual Cycling the Erie Canal tour is a great event that lets people of all ages and from 36 states experience the Erie Canal corridor in a unique way. Although the many historic and interesting sites along the way are a real plus for participants, the Canalway Trail itself is the real draw, as cyclists can relax and enjoy riding in a safe, car-free environment.”

Roughly two-thirds of the 400-mile bicycle tour takes place on the completed portion of the Canalway Trail. When complete, the New York State Canalway Trail System will span more than 500 miles and connect numerous cities, towns and villages along the Erie, Cayuga-Seneca, Oswego and Champlain Canals, making it one of the longest multi-use recreational trails in the country.

During the bike trek, Cycling the Erie Canal participants will have the opportunity to participate in guided tours of the Canal, historic sites and museums, such as the Erie Canal Village, Fort Stanwix National Monument, and Old Erie Canal State Park.

June 21, 2010 (Utica, NY) – The Herkimer County Leadership and Support Team was recognized as the Team of the Year by Upstate Cerebral Palsy. Elizabeth Pritchard of Little Falls, Jean Foti of Herkimer, and Kelli Morton of Herkimer, were honored with this distinction at the Upstate Cerebral Palsy Annual Meeting on May 23 at the Radisson Hotel-Utica Centre.

The Team of the Year Award honors a group within the agency that functions effectively to serve children and adults with differing abilities while exemplifying excellence, passion, integrity, caring and respect. The Herkimer County Leadership and Support Team goes above and beyond the call of duty each day, demonstrating their dedication to the agency through their drive and hard work. Through team work, individuals from Herkimer County are assisted in living more independent lives.

Pritchard, director of community services, Foti, supportive housing manager, and Morton, case manager, acted professionally and expended a great deal of effort to help the agency when most needed. They took time out of their busy work schedules to achieve this and always had a helpful, can-do attitude. All are assets both to the agency, to its individuals, and to the community.

Upstate Cerebral Palsy celebrated its Annual Meeting on May 23, exactly 60 years from its date of incorporation in 1950. Staff, individuals, and past and present members of the board of directions gathered together to celebrate the agency’s accomplishments throughout those years. Congratulates to the Herkimer County Leadership and Support Team, on behalf of the Upstate Cerebral Palsy family.

(Utica, NY – June 2, 2010) Upstate Cerebral Palsy George F. Aney Community Residence, located at 138 W. German St., Herkimer, has had a new roof recently installed.

The renovation comes from support of Assemblyman Marc Butler who helped secure a legislative grant in the amount of $10,000. The funds helped complete the essential renovations and capital improvements needed at this Herkimer County residence that provides residential and treatment services to 14 individuals with mental health challenges.

The Aney Community Residence, along with the Bucklin Residence in Little Falls, provides safe, supervised home environments for adults living with a mental illness. Individuals participating in these programs are working to gain the independent living skills that they will need to transition into a less-restrictive, supported housing program.

“Assemblyman Butler has been a true advocate of the critical services Upstate Cerebral Palsy provides in the Herkimer area,” said Louis Tehan, president and CEO of Upstate Cerebral Palsy. “His support helps to ensure the quality of life we provide for the residents at Aney.”

The Aney Residence was named in honor of the family of George Aney, Herkimer County attorney and long-time supporter of Upstate Cerebral Palsy. For more information on naming gift opportunities at Upstate Cerebral Palsy, contact Colleen Cianfrocco, vice president of Community Development, at (315) 724-6907, ext. 2279.

ALBANY, NY (05/14/2010)(readMedia)– The New York State Thruway Authority announced that the blasting portion of a rock remediation project just west of Interchange 29A (Little Falls, Dolgeville, Route 169) will require brief daily traffic stoppages in both westbound and eastbound directions, beginning Monday, May 17, 2010.

A single blast is scheduled each day, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., weather permitting. Traffic in both directions will be brought to a stop during the blasting operation. Stoppages may last up to 10 minutes westbound and up to 20 minutes eastbound and could cause residual traffic delays. The blasting portion of the project is expected to continue through the end of August 2010.

Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be in place to alert motorists of the construction and any delays that may result from it.

As always, motorists are reminded to remain alert and aware of their surroundings, while traveling through the construction work zone. Motorists should also keep in mind that fines are doubled for speeding in construction work zones.

The Authority appreciates motorists’ patience and understanding while this essential improvement takes place.

The $3.7 million project is being performed by Rifenburg Construction Inc., of Troy, New York, and is expected to be completed in November 2010.

Herkimer, NY—The Herkimer County College Foundation awarded $99,799 in scholarships to 127 Herkimer County Community College students at the 18th annual Scholarship Recognition Reception held recently at HCCC.

HCC Foundation Board Vice-President Bruce Ward made remarks, while scholarship committee member Jennifer Herzog recognized the student winners. Jan Squadrito, senior program officer with The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, was keynote speaker, and spoke of the “power of an endowment” and its ability to grow and continue giving beyond the original donation.

HCCC President Ann Marie Murray recognized the donors who made the scholarships possible and said, “Our campus is a vibrant place where students can thrive and transform their lives. Without your generosity these students might not have been able to come to HCCC and reach their goals.” Murray said that receiving a scholarship is a powerful incentive for students, both financially and personally. “College is hard, tiring and difficult work, and often students become weary and wonder if they can do it or if it is worth it. It makes it hard for a student to question their ability when they have a supporter saying to them with their donation, “we believe in you and we want you to succeed,” Murray said.
