(Utica, NY) On Saturday, July 24, Care Net Pregnancy Center of Central NY will hold its annual WALK FOR LIFE. This year’s WALK celebrates Care Net’s 21st year of providing free services to individuals in our communities facing unexpected pregnancies. Care Net Pregnancy Center is a Christian outreach that provides services at four centers in Utica, Rome, Herkimer, and Oneida. In addition to pregnancy options counseling and ultrasound confirmation by an area physician, Care Net provides referrals for prenatal care, parenting and mentoring classes, abortion recovery counseling, baby and maternity clothing, and abstinence education. Care Net does not provide abortion services or referrals.

Since 1989 Care Net has helped more than 10,000 women and their families and reached over 50,000 local teens with a character-based, abstinence education program. Care Net is supported by hundreds of faithful volunteers, churches and individuals.

Care Net Executive Director, Jacque Wagner states, “WALK FOR LIFE is an opportunity for people to support the compassionate services of Care Net Pregnancy Center. We want people in our community to know that Care Net provides a safe, caring, confidential place for individuals facing an unexpected pregnancy. We offer free and confidential services because we believe every woman should have the information and support she needs to make a well informed decision about her pregnancy. Ninety-nine percent of our clients would highly recommend Care Net to a friend.”

The Walk will begin at TR Proctor Park, corner of Culver Avenue and Welsh Bush Road in Utica with registration at 9:00 am. Festivities include children’s activities, information booths, tee shirts, top fund-raiser prizes, food and fun. Care Net’s goal is to raise $30,000 for their ongoing work. For information on Care Net services or WALK FOR LIFE call 733.5404.

(Utica, NY) The American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley has selected New York Army National Guard Sgt. Vincent P. Scalise of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry to be honored for his selfless service to the community to improve the lives of veterans in Central New York. Scalise is from Utica.

The American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley held a breakfast and reception on March 18, at the Herkimer County Community College. The Red Cross selected six people as this year’s 13th annual ‘Great Heroes.’ The award presentation was held at the Robert McLaughlin Campus Center, Herkimer County Community College, 100 Reservoir Road in Herkimer.

The 2010 Great Heroes honorees, Steve McMurray and Remington Arms, were announced by the Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley March 11.

The recipients of the Community Awards included Bill Keeler, Clara Barton Society Award; Tiffany Lott, Blood Services Award; Carol Higgins, Emergency Responder Award; Julia Bunce, Youth Leadership Award; and Sgt. Vincent Scalise, Military Award.

Scalise, from Utica, served as a combat infantryman in Iraq with his unit, returning to Utica in late 2004. When he returned, however, he dedicated himself to helping his fellow veterans reintegrate with their families and communities.

Scalise first founded a charitable organization, The Utica Center for Development, raising funds to refurbish the former YMCA in Utica as the Central New York Veteran’s Outreach Center. The facility in downtown Utica opened Nov. 11, 2009.

All funds raised from the Great Heroes Breakfast will support the emergency services department of the American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley. These services include local disaster relief, the services for the armed forces and international tracing services.

Additionally, gifts made on March 18 will be matched by the Herkimer Polish Community Home.

For additional information about the Veteran’s Outreach Center, visit http://www.army.mil/-news/2009/11/17/30568-27th-brigade-soldier-spearheads-veterans-outreach-effort-one-soldiers-efforts-create-opportunities-for-veterans-in-central-ny/
