(Herkimer, Frankfort – July 20, 2010) Herkimer County Community College (HCCC) and the Village of Frankfort Fire Department (FFD) recently entered into an agreement to offer a housing option for students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic program at HCCC. Approved students will stay in housing provided by the FFD in exchange for 25-hours duty time or on-call hours of service per week.

To be eligible, students must be at least 18 years of age, be enrolled full-time in the College’s EMT/Paramedic program and maintain current NYS Department of Health certification as an EMT Basic or greater level provider. All certifications must be current and maintained throughout the duration of the housing contract with the FFD. Students participating in the program are required to maintain enrollment at HCCC and be in good academic standing. The FFD will select up to four students each year.

Living quarters have been completed at the fire station to accommodate students in the program. A core committee of emergency medical technicians, officers and firefighters has been formed to monitor and mentor the program. The program will begin for the fall 2010 semester.

The objective of the program is to augment current volunteer emergency services staff and to mentor students considering a career in emergency medical services allowing them to practice skills involving patient care and transport to medical facilities.

Frankfort Fire Chief Charles Conigliaro said, “This is a win-win for the emergency services delivery, the community and students alike. We have to be pro-active to address present and future volunteer short falls, and to consider innovative programs to continue the continuity of the delivery of emergency services. We appreciate that HCCC is embracing this program partnership. We hope it will increase student enrollment in the Paramedic program and provide future participants in the Bunk-In program.”

“We are pleased to offer this program to our second-year EMT students. It is an innovative way to provide much-needed housing for students while benefiting the community,” said Michael Oriolo, HCCC Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.

Interested students must complete an application to the Frankfort Fire Department and be accepted as a member of the department in order to participate in the housing option. Applications to the FFD and the program are available at the HCCC Admissions Office or at http://villageoffrankfortny.org/content/PublicSafety/View/1.

For more information about the Frankfort Fire Department or the Bunk-In Program, contact Chief Conigliaro at 315-894-8621 or cconig4320@netzero.com. For more information about the Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic program at HCCC, call 315-866-0300, ext. 8278 or email snyderhb@herkimer.edu.

(Herkimer, NY – July 8, 2010) Herkimer County Community College President Ann Marie Murray recently announced the appointment of Dr. Michael McCaskey, of Richfield Springs, as Vice President/Dean of Academic Affairs.

As the College’s Chief Academic Officer, McCaskey will be responsible for all areas of academic affairs including academic policy and planning, instruction, program development and evaluation, staff supervision and development, assessment and accreditation. Areas under McCaskey’s supervision will include the academic divisions, Academic Support Center, Internet Academy, Community Education, Instructional Resources, Registrar, Radio/TV Production, Academic Advisement Center and Library Services.

McCaskey brings 23 years of experience as an educator and administrator. He has served as dean for the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources at SUNY College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill since 2006. He managed 70 faculty and staff and an overall budget of five million dollars; facilitated articulation agreements with other institutions; developed five new bachelor’s degree programs; developed joint program agreements with several Chinese colleges; and was involved in recruitment, selection and evaluation of faculty. He was also instrumental in securing capital construction funds for the Environmental Science and Technology Building and Agriculture and Natural Resource Center. Prior to holding the position of dean, McCaskey was a professor and chair of the Agriculture Engineering Department.

HCCC President Ann Marie Murray said, “I am pleased to announce Dr. McCaskey’s selection as Chief Academic Officer at Herkimer County Community College. Michael’s broad range of experience as a faculty member and administrator within SUNY has prepared him well for this key position. His leadership will be essential in mapping the future of Herkimer’s academic policies, programs and services. I am looking forward to welcoming Michael to the campus in August.”

McCaskey’s appointment is the result of a national search headed by HCCC Professor Timothy McLean who served as chair of a nine-member search committee. McCaskey will begin his tenure at HCCC on August 9, 2010.

McCaskey said, “I am very excited about the opportunity to be a part of the team at Herkimer County Community College. During the interview process I was impressed by the quality and dedication of the administration, faculty and staff. This played a large part in my decision to accept this appointment. As an 18 year resident of Herkimer County, I have an appreciation for HCCC’s reputation in providing a quality educational experience for students and the positive impact the institution has on the community. I plan to support and strengthen existing academic programs while also developing new opportunities in educational programming.”

McCaskey holds a B.S. in Agricultural Mechanization from Washington State University and an M.Ed. in Agricultural Education and Ph.D. in Agricultural Education from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

Herkimer, NY—Herkimer County Community College will hold Instant Admission Days on Thursday, July 8 and Monday, July 19 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Students interested in attending HCCC in the fall 2010 semester will be able to apply and get admitted to the College on the same day.

“Typically, students send an application in for review and must wait to be admitted,” said Robert Palmieri, Associate Dean of Enrollment Management. “We can eliminate that wait and provide students a quick answer with instant admissions.”

Students should bring an official high school transcript or official GED test scores. Transfer students should also bring official transcripts from their previous colleges. Financial aid counselors will be available to assist students and their parents.

Appointments are not necessary. For more information, call 315-866-0300, ext. 8278
